Shotwell doesn't have the concept of just browsing a folder; you must "import"

And importing without copying the images (because why?!) crashed after a few images on Ubuntu 24.04.

Allows you to view your favorite photos from your past and present with ease. No ads. No IAPs. Allows you to edit your images with relative ease. A must-have application for anyone who's Personal Computer is also a Linux Computer.

Runs pretty smooth with 60k photos on ubuntu. Also, it was not hard to transfer to new pc.

What is Shotwell?

Shotwell is an open source photo organizer designed for the GNOME desktop environment.

Features

Import photos from folders or from any digital camera supported by gPhoto. Shotwell automatically groups photos taken at the same time. You can also use tags and ratings to organize your photo collection. You can rotate, crop, reduce red-eye, and adjust the exposure, saturation, tint, and temperature of each photo. Publish photos and videos to Facebook, Flickr, Picasa Web Albums, and YouTube.
