What is Runer App?
Runer is a local-first language-learning reader that supports a variety of formats including ebooks, RSS, podcasts, audiobooks, and videos. It is a desktop app that allows you to learn languages through content you consume. The supported formats include EPUB, MOBI, FB2, AZW3, TXT, HTML, Markdown ebooks, RSS articles, podcasts, EPUB audiobooks with synchronized text, local video, and YouTube videos.
The app offers several features to aid in language learning. You can look up words, analyze sentence structure, save meanings with their original context, collect phrases and sentences, and review them with spaced repetition. It also supports offline StarDict and MDict dictionaries.
Additionally, Runer offers optional AI tools to explain grammar, summarize passages, expand vocabulary, and generate quizzes. The AI requests are sent directly to your provider and do not pass through Runer’s servers.
All your vocabulary, reading progress, highlights, and study data remain on your device. The core reading and language tools work offline once the required language models are installed. Currently, Runer supports English, Japanese, and Spanish and is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
