Route Map runs a traceroute on your own computer and draws the path on a world map. Each router is placed by its operator's own hostname first, using CAIDA's Hoiho rules and carrier site codes, and an IP database is asked only when the name says nothing.

Live trace from Manila to heise.de on macOS: map, route summary with AS path and RPKI, hop table and hop details.

Platforms

  • Mac  macOS 12 or later, Apple silicon and Intel builds. Not notarized yet, so Gatekeeper asks on first start; the download page has the steps.
  • Windows  x86_64 only. Builds are not yet code-signed, so SmartScreen warns on first start; checksums are GPG-signed. Paths (multipath) needs Windows 10 version 2004 or later.
  • Linux  x86_64 only (.deb, .rpm, AppImage, tar.gz); no ARM build yet.

What is Route Map?

Route Map runs a traceroute on your own computer and draws the path on a world map. Each router is placed by its operator's own hostname first, using CAIDA's Hoiho rules and carrier site codes, and an IP database is asked only when the name says nothing. Every placement the round-trip time makes impossible is rejected, and each hop shows the source of its location.

Beside the map: the AS path with RPKI status, the countries crossed, the BGP view of the destination prefix, and a typical latency from RIPE Atlas anchors. Watch mode traces continuously, mtr style, with loss and jitter per hop. Paths finds the routes a load balancer spreads traffic over. Reverse trace uses a RIPE Atlas probe near the target to trace back to you. Exports to PNG, PDF and JSON, with a command-line interface. No account, no telemetry; one switch turns all online lookups off.
