QCad uses the AutoCAD DXF file format internally and to save and import files. AutoCAD DWG support is available as a commercial plugin.
QCAD is available in two versions: Community edition and Professional edition.
QCAD Community Edition is free and open source. Compared to the Professional edition it has no scripting or poly-line support - also features are a few months behind. Features include layers, dxf files import and export, many flexible drawing tools and precise selection tools.

Comments and Reviews
QCAD is amazing software. There is a free version, which does everything I need, but I bought a paid-for version to support the developer. Also, the QCAD book is really good as well, I learnt a great deal about CAD principles and approaches.
I came to CAD via a graphics background (Illustrator, Photoshop, Inkscape etc.). It took a bit of effort to get the hang of QCAD but now I wouldn't dream of designing without it.
Cannot beat this product for the price. Easy to use and learn, and light weight.
I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an AutoCAD replacement, especially if you're using another operating system.
