What is ptop?

ptop (Pate’s top) is a native Rust reimplementation of vtop 0.6.1 for macOS and Linux. It recreates the dotted CPU and memory history graphs, grouped process list, sorting, keyboard and mouse navigation, and 12 bundled themes.

The goal is to keep vtop’s familiar interface with less runtime overhead. In three matched benchmark pairs on an M2 Max, ptop 0.1.0 averaged 7.31 MiB own-process RSS versus vtop’s 111.18 MiB, and 23.02% versus 27.20% of one CPU core. These measurements are specific to that workload and are not a guarantee for other machines.

ptop is free and MIT licensed. The npm package currently includes a binary for Apple Silicon running macOS 15 or newer. Linux users install from source with Cargo. Windows is not supported.
