The closest alternative to postale.io would be Zoho Mail free plan. However, Zoho Mail fee plan has POP and IMAP disabled. which prevents users from using their domain email addresses with common mail clients such as Gmail, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc. You're limited to using Zoho's webmail only.
This fact actually triggered some rage from Zoho Mail users. See for instance: https://help.zoho.com/portal/community/topic/zoho-free-tier-pop-imap-activesync-no-longer-free
postale.io doesn't have that limitation, as POP and IMAP are enabled, despite it being free too. It's also much lighter and simpler to use. and doesn't have a limit on the number of domains (Zoho Mail free plan is limited to 1 domain only).

Well... our beloved postale.io has also bitten the dust! Now they charge a $ a month, payable upfront for the entire year, for the same plan that they were earlier offering for free.
...and thus the cookie crumbles!
