What is Popcorn Vote?

Popcorn Vote is a free, self-hosted web app that helps a household decide what to watch together. Everyone adds films to a shared list and receives the same number of votes on a recurring schedule. Votes can be saved up, spent on a single film, or moved to another one right up until the decision is made, so the film that only one person is longing for eventually gets its turn as well.

When it is time to choose, the film with the most votes wins. If the leaders are tied, an animated wheel of fortune breaks the deadlock in front of everyone. After the credits, the film and each person's star rating move into a shared archive that builds up into a family movie diary over time.

Films are searched by title and come with poster, summary, runtime, ratings and trailer through the TMDB API, with IMDb ratings available through an optional OMDb key. The interface is mobile-first and installable as a PWA, and a separate TV view is meant for the big reveal on the living room screen. Nine interface languages are included.

Popcorn Vote runs on your own server as a single Docker container on linux/amd64 and linux/arm64, stores everything in one SQLite file with no separate database service, and is MIT licensed.
