A really nice looking alternative to Instagram. It's Free Software and don't sell your data. The project isn't dead, you can sign up in other instance (the magic of decentralised social network).
It seems you cannot specify licenses for Post/Photos/Collections. Some users started to write licenses in their bio, but it's not written that can worth anything at all.
You can select a license for your photos as of 2018 (see https://github.com/pixelfed/pixelfed/issues/13). Here's a tutorial on how to do it: https://learningaloud.com/blog/2021/06/13/creative-commons-with-pixelfed/
PixelFed doens't totally work.

I like Pixelfed as THE perfect alternative to Instagram. Albeit being a project with "work in progress", it already delivers everything that helps me to leave Instagram behind including official apps for iOS and Android (currently in Beta, official release due at end of May, 2023). Founded upon ActivityPub it seamlessly helps to like and boost media posts on other supporting solutions like Mastodon and offers a big community on many channels. Definitely on of the best Fediverse-projects out there!
Love the look, love the lack of ads, love the lack of celeb nonsense, love the freedom. However after using it for a few months I discovered no one worth following and had no interest in my posts which made it feel as though I was just posting to myself. I hope it grows as we need an alternative to Instagram, away from the Meta nonsense I want Pixelfed to succeed. Please.
