Checked layers- that seems easy enough. Wanted to draw rectangle -there's no rectangle tool, but filling the selection rectangle is a workaround. Wanted to fill it white -there's no palette with white (?!?) AI tells me to choose pure white by setting Red, Green, and Blue (R, G, B) all to 255. Moved on to https://www.pinta-project.com/ which I think is rather good for it's lightweightness, but if you really want the portability, PhotoDemon will let you add a color palette.

Excellent indeed. The only thing I'd love to disable would be the startup splash image. Does anyone know how to do that?

Excellent, fast, and easy photo editor with a remarkable number of features. I use it frequently to clean up photos and the various great filters are great fun to use on backgrounds for either PowerPoint presentations or my Windows/Mac desktop. Great fun, very useful, and actively developed.

I really like PhotoDemon as a versatile, easy to use, and fast image editor, more powerful than IrfranView or Microsoft Paint, and lighter than GIMP or Krita. In addition, it is open source, compatible with older computers, and portable. A gem of an app that is not sufficiently appreciated.
Simple and effective like Paint.net or Photopea
I never commented here before, but today I have to do it. My photo editing requirements are not many, but I was tired of waiting for my old copy of Photoshop 7.0 to open just to do some basic photo editing. I don't need more than "simple", but I wanted it to be light and fast, like a Snapseed for Windows. I downloaded this program — an it's exactly what I needed. It seems to have all the features I had on my old Photoshop, but it opens in one second and it's very, very light. So, if you're like me and you want a lightweight software to do some basic editing for your imgs on social media or work presentations, this is the app you need!
Limited yet powerful selection of tools, as straightforward as it can get. For example, one of the most important features : W- Magic Wand. By default it can select a leaf on a tree instantly, for example. But it's straight seems to be also a weakness. You can't add or subtract to the current selection. For example: Magic Wand + Polygon - Lasso tool. Correct me if I wrong. 90/100% IMHO.
