Awesome app, I loved it! Overall, it’s impressive and works really well. I tried downloading some models; the OpenAI ones didn’t work well for me, but the NVIDIA models worked perfectly.

What is OpenWhispr?

OpenWhispr is an open-source desktop dictation application powered by OpenAI Whisper. It converts spoken language into text and allows both local and cloud processing. Users can start or stop dictation with a global hotkey and choose their AI backend from options like OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, or local models. The software includes an auto-paste function and a movable dictation panel. Users can manage settings, access history, and configure API keys. Transcripts can be stored locally and users can download or remove local Whisper models to save disk space.

The software offers a cloud feature for instant transcription without API keys. It provides free and Pro plans, with an account system supporting Google OAuth and email/password sign-in. The free tier allows up to 2,000 words per week, while the Pro tier offers unlimited use with a 7-day free trial. Users can customize their AI assistant with a name for natural interactions. OpenWispr ensures privacy through local processing of voice data. It uses a modern UI built with React 19, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS v4, optimized for high-speed performance. It is compatible with macOS, Windows, and Linux platforms, supports automatic pasting of transcribed text, and allows custom dictionary additions for improved accuracy.
