OpenRGB is a bit tricky to set up initially for the more advanced effects. In exchange, it is lighter weight to the alternatives, and more extensible.
To get the most out of OpenRGB, you need the Effects plugin. Otherwise, you get some basic solid color choices, Color Cycle, standard rainbow fare, breathing effects. Once you have the effects plugin, you can set up marquee, stacking, comet patterns, etc.
Alternatives like MSI's Dragon Center is more intuitive, though much bloatier, and...

I made the mistake of using Razer Synapse for a while, which is an abomination.
OpenRGB was a pleasant surprise: It doesn't even need to be installed. Just dump a few files where you like, and run it.
I can't speak to other platforms, but under Windows, it creates exactly one directory--for settings. It doesn't install any drivers or services, and doesn't need to run constantly.
It doesn't even need elevation in my experience, although there may be some scenarios in which it does.
It is a FANTASTIC breath of fresh air after dealing with Razer Synapse's privacy violations, bugs, and frustrations.
And it's free. Go figure.
Edit: Causes coil whine for some reason, I don't recommend leaving this program open.
I am using this as alternative to Logtech G Hub.
OpenRGB does not have to be open to save settings of what colours the RGB should be.
It however does not detect my Motospeed keyboard.
What are you talking about here? It can't cause any coil whine, lol :-))

Alternatives like MSI's Dragon Center is more intuitive, though much bloatier, and insists on reinstalling itself frequently, in spite of telling it NOT to update in the settings. Gigabyte's control center has fewer options out of the box than OpenRGB, but it is easier to use.
Overall I am happy with OpenRGB, but it takes some time to configure to my liking, not unlike a lot of FOSS.
Nice simple lightweight program without any bloat. The only issue I've come across is it doesn't always restore colors when resuming from sleep.
Linux support hella fine. Works flawlessly and simple
Useless tool since it doesn't save settings in devices permanently. I have two mice Razer Viper Mini and Steelseries Rival 110. Author says that he doesn't want to wear out flash memory in devices but this is a poor excuse. Steelseries app saves permanently. I cannot run OpenRGB on target machine since it isn't even a computer , but standalone device. Permanent saving is a the basic functionality that must work to have any use of this.
Absolutely insane app. Brilliantly helpful and portable! It helped me to ignore all of that clunky manufacturer RGB software, especially Armoury Crate.
