Comment summary: Nomacs is praised for its fast, lightweight, and cross-platform nature. Users highlight its intuitive interface, batch processing capabilities, and efficiency. It's considered an excellent alternative to IrfanView, especially for Linux users. Concerns include slower performance on Windows compared to competitors and potential discontinuation due to a lack of updates. Some users report issues with usability on Mac. Overall, it remains a favored option for many due to its simplicity and effectiveness.

Very complete. Easy, small and simple. One feature to underline is you can print images from it. Strange as it sounds, there's a bunch of good image viewers and editors in linux but astoundingly, many lack that option.

Appears to be discontinued. No release for more than 4 years and open source repository is very quiet.

As of Feb 2025, the repo is quite active but still no new releases (on Github, at least) so you'll need to build from source or use a package manager

Open source, has all the tools that I need from a image viewer, is lightweight, easy to navigate, fast and simple

Very good simplified image editor/cropper. Three requests: 1. pdf cropper ability 2. change the icon.. I am keenly aware of the issues of those struggling with alcohol which is a major epidemic. 3. Thumbnail size options. Thumbnail strip option is too tiny.

so far so good. excellent for laptops that are either lower end or like mine: running on low performance to save battery. the ui is rather similar to imageglass, just runs faster. honestly, everything is better than the built in microsoft viewer.

Works great. Multiplatform is a plus.

I've just tried nomacs on a Mac, and it is unusable as a picture viewer:

  • "Fit to screen" is unstable: it can switch off by itself with no possibility to switch it back easily;
  • Browsing arrows are unstable - sometimes they just stop working;
  • You can easily put it in a mode where only a screen area matching the original image is usable - the existence of this mode makes no sense at all, but how to switch it off is unclear.

What is nomacs?

nomacs is a small, fast image viewer able to handle the most common image formats including RAW images. Additionally it is possible to synchronize multiple viewers. A synchronization of viewers running on the same computer or via LAN is possible. It allows to compare images and spot the differences (e.g. schemes of architects to show the progress).
