Nmap is described as '("Network Mapper") is a free and open source (license) utility for network exploration or security auditing' and is a very popular Network Monitor in the network & admin category. There are more than 25 alternatives to Nmap for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and BSD. The best alternative is Fing, which is free.     Last time I checked Fing will only scan the directly connected network. The primary value of nmap is the ability to check ports on remote devices.
