Super simple to set up, and works super well. Their dashboard is also very complete and intuitive.

It's open source, it has a sustainable business model and it works well. They recently implemented profiles so I can switch to any of my clients' networks easily. Their iOS app didn't work for me but I haven't tested the update they released last month. IPv6 is on the roadmap. I used to use Tailscale but they're not open source.

We use it in our small startup for connecting vms in a k8s cluster. Works really well, where we’ve not had any issues.
The only challenge we’ve faced is when we want to deploy their k8s operator so our laptops can access k8s services directly. That is a bit more tricky to configure (and is not as performant, due to the router nodes, but it works fine for testing).

What is NetBird?
NetBird is an open-source Zero Trust Networking platform designed by engineers, for engineers. NetBird makes it radically simple to deploy secure private networks for modern organizations.
Built on the trusted, high-performance WireGuard® protocol, NetBird eliminates the limitations of traditional VPNs by establishing high-throughput, low-latency decentralized private networks. NetBird’s robust architecture provides a single, intuitive management console to enforce granular, identity-based access policies, integrating with your existing Identity Provider (IdP) for SSO and MFA.
With native and built-in integration with your identity provider of choice, your devices, servers, and cloud resources form direct, encrypted tunnels to each other. A central control center gives full visibility and simple, point-and-click management for remote access. NetBird's decentralized architecture has several benefits:
-
Zero bottlenecks: Traffic flows directly between peers, eliminating the latency and bandwidth limits caused by routing through a central gateway.
-
Enhanced resilience: With no single point of failure, NetBird ensures continuous connectivity. If your on-premises data center goes down, users can still reach cloud resources and cloud-to-cloud links remain fully operational.
-
Scalability and privacy: NetBird’s lightweight client runs on each peer, while its cloud-based management plane handles authentication, key exchange, and policy distribution. Because data traffic never passes through the management service, you maintain maximum performance, privacy, and scalability and full ownership of your data.
-
NetBird integrates seamlessly with CrowdStrike, Microsoft Intune, SentinelOne, pfSense, OPNsense, and many others. NetBird also empowers MSPs to securely manage and connect multiple customer networks through a single, unified platform.
Use it for:
- Radically Simple Secure Remote Access, connecting anything, anywhere
- Zero-Config Deployment: Replace legacy VPNs with a peer-to-peer WireGuard®-based network
- Seamless IdP integrations for SSO and MFA
- Dynamic Posture Checks and Device Compliance for Zero Trust
- Centralized Network Management
- Detailed Activity Logging and Auditing
- Multi-Cloud and Hybrid Connectivity
- Access Control & Micro-Segmentation
- Multi-Tenant Management for MSPs: Manage all customer networks securely from one unified dashboard

NetBird makes my homelab setup so easy!!

In my opinion the best alternative to ngrok, easy to setup, has alot of features available for free, even when I looked up their paid plan the price is affordable for startup teams.
Easy to setup if you are using their SaaS offering, the entire source code is available atm under a FLOSS license. Good alternative to TailScale, NetMaker. Only other alternate being HeadScale. Is decentralized and p2p, with good group based RBAC.
