Got this set up in 20 minutes with four RSTP IP cameras. By far the easiest surveillance system I have ever configured.

Zoneminder took a whole evening, Shinobi took two, Kereberos took two.

Zoneminder was stable, but has lots of false positives.

Shinobi and Kerberos required massive shopping lists of dependencies, and were very difficult for someone unfamiliar with NodeJS and Docker (respectively) to set up.

Shinobi and Kerberos were also very unstable. Before installing MotionEye, I had left Shinobi running for a week. I came back to find it has spawned hundreds of random FFMPEG processes, pushing my load average over 200 and taking out all other services on the system.

What is Motion?

Motion is a program that monitors the video signal from one or more cameras and is able to detect if a significant part of the picture has changed; in other words, it can detect motion.

The program is written in C and is made for the Linux operating system. Motion is a command line based tool whose output can be either jpeg, ppm fies or mpeg video sequences. Motion is strictly command line driven and can run as a daemon with a rather small footprint.

Motion is the perfect tool for keeping an eye on your property, keeping only those images that are interesting.
