What is MKVToolnix?
MKVToolnix is a set of tools to create, alter and inspect Matroska files under Linux, other Unices and Windows. They do for Matroska what the OGMtools do for the OGM format and then some. The latest builds now have the ability to create WebM compliant Files.
MKVToolnix is available in two formats. Either graphical user interface (GUI) or command line. Those two packages are named "mkvtoolnix" or "mkvtoolnix-gui".
MKVToolnix is able to split large MKV into multiple files. Without A/V out of sync problem, quality loss, or re-encoding. You can choose between 5 different split modes: After output size, After output duration, After specific timestamps, By parts based on timestamps, By parts based on frame/field numbers, After frame/field numbers, and Before chapters.
With MKVToolnix tools one can get information about (via mkvinfo) Matroska files, extract tracks/data from (via mkvextract) Matroska files and create (via mkvmerge) Matroska files from other media files. Matroska is a new multimedia file format aiming to become THE new container format for the future. You can find more information about it and its underlying technology, the Extensible Binary Meta Language (EBML), at http://www.matroska.org

Comments and Reviews
Fast and easy for video remuxing without any hassle.
Haali's Media Splitter comes with a small tool that let's you do similar things. It's GUI is more minimalistic, but it works well as a tag editor, in contrast to MKVToolnix.

Great GUI tool for editing mkv containers.
Really easy and fast to extract or add audio files from Mp4/MKV files. Really easy and fast to join video files together.
Easy to use Swiss Army Knife for remuxing to and manipulationg contents of Matroska container files.
