Maru comes with a Debian container installed. This is better than Andronix and others because:

  • it doesn't need you to be rooted
  • it feels like it's part of the phone (desktop starts when you plug in hdmi; screensavers and the phone lock affect both screens; can use phone at same time)
  • Way less time for setup! No waiting for a script to complete or tutorial following.
  • Feels like using a real Debian system. Libreoffice, Firefox and gimp work!

My small annoyances are:

  • Heat and battery consumption. But the Nexus 5 is the Nexus 5 haha.
  • I found myself with near constant reboots, but I did manually delete the container for this to happen.. Oops.
  • You can't use it over VNC without settong it up on HDMI/Miracast first. To be fair, not having VNC by default is more secure and I should have a display adapter.
  • Maru is an entire ROM. I wish things didn't have to be that way.

Overall, I totally recommend trying it.

regrettably its only for Nexus smartphones ( so I understand it :( ). Can I install it as PC Os too ?

What is Maru?

Maru makes personal computing more context-aware by giving you the best interface for your environment. That means when you're on the go, Maru is your phone; when you're at your desk, Maru is your desktop.

Maru packs a complete desktop experience on your smartphone. Your phone runs independently of your desktop so you can take a call and work on your big screen at the same time. Personal computing couldn't be simpler.

Maru takes advantage of your HDMI screen to bring you multi-app, desktop-class productivity.

Connect your phone to any HDMI screen. Maru automatically detects when an external display is available and spins up your desktop. It boots in less than 5 seconds.

Pair up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Any Android-compatible bluetooth peripherals will work with Maru.

Enjoy desktop productivity. Gotta run? Disconnect from your screen and Maru will preserve your desktop state in the background so you can pick up right where you left off.
