What is Manutius?

Manutius is a Mac app for authors who publish their own books. Instead of a manuscript that gets formatted at the end, you write on the real pages of the finished book, in any of popular seven trim sizes from 5×8 to 7×10. Running heads, page numbers, drop caps, chapter openers, widows and orphans are handled as you type, and the status bar shows the printed page count the whole time.

When the book is done, Manutius exports a print-ready PDF with embedded fonts, a reflowable EPUB for Kindle, Apple Books and Kobo, a Word manuscript for editors, and paperback and hardcover cover PDFs with the spine computed for Amazon KDP and IngramSpark. It imports Word documents and splits them into chapters on their headings. Everything runs offline, including spelling, grammar and read-aloud. Versions are kept per chapter. An optional Claude assistant can read and edit the book with you, and each of its edits can be undone in one step.
