A solid, AI-powered proofreading tool that shines with its multilingual support. It offers context-aware suggestions, tone detection, and smooth integration with browsers, word processors, and email clients. That said, some edits can feel overly fussy, and the interface, though practical, lacks the polish of rivals. The free version covers the basics, but advanced features, like detailed style tips and plagiarism checks, require a Premium subscription. As of February 2026, even the browser...

LanguageTool was the best spellcheck extension for multilingual users, however their extension is now for Premium users only, rendering it useless to any Free user. Quality-wise, it's good, but I can't recommend it considering the new paywall. I hope I can find a true, mulitlingual alternative someday...

What is LanguageTool?
LanguageTool is a free proofreading software compatible with multiple applications like LibreOffice, Microsoft Word, Firefox, and Google Chrome. It supports around 20 languages and can be customized. It has two versions: free and premium. The free version has a 10,000 character limit per check and can identify errors in multiple languages. The premium version increases the character limit to 100,000, adds a Microsoft Word add-on, and can detect more errors. It also includes features like incorrect gender usage detection in German and incorrect checksums detection in ISBN and IBAN numbers. The web and desktop versions are open source, but the browser extensions are not.

Comments and Reviews
Private + open source + free to run your own instance? That's amazing.
LanguageTool browser addon is no longer open source. Only the desktop app is open source.
LanguageTool does not respect your privacy as they claim, they actually store and have real people reading what you type in certain occasions, and they also track you through multiple devices using Google Analytics. I will post two texts that were taken from their page about privacy, you can read it all at https://languagetool.org/legal/privacy.
“If you explicitly ignore corrections, we log the internal rule id of that error and the text fragment marked as incorrect (i.e. the small part of the sentence that was underlined as an error) and 15 characters to the left and to the right of the fragment. This enables us to analyze and avoid false alarms.”
“This website uses Google Analytics, a web analysis service of Google LLC ("Google"). The use includes the "Universal Analytics" operating mode. This makes it possible to assign data, sessions and interactions across multiple devices to a pseudonymous user ID and thus analyze a user's activities across devices.”

Brilliant correction of sentences on Windows! 10/10
This site is among the ones I use most almost every day, as it helps me in writing and correcting errors in my texts!
Its verification is fast and excellent, not requiring the creation of an account (for most resources).
