Comments and Reviews
First we had “Cdcat,” then came “VVV” (Virtual Volumes View) and then “Katalog” appeared. Katalog was clearly inspired by VVV. It takes the good things from VVV and adds many improvements. First of all: the database format is more contemporary. It is now “SQLite", instead of the somewhat obscure “Firebird”. In my opinion, a big improvement. Furthermore, searching a large database of indexed hard drives, usb sticks, CDs, DVDs, blu rays is now a lot smoother. For example, you no longer have to constantly click “search” with the mouse, the enter key suffices. Searching through half a million records takes only a few seconds. This is a worthy successor/replacement to VVV. It has much of the same functionality, but is more modern, intuitive and has a better layout and 'user experience'. Of course improvements are possible, they are being worked on. It is open source and in active development. A Linux version is available, but not yet as a 'deb' or otherwise.
