What is inlaut?

inlaut is a push-to-talk dictation app for the macOS menu bar. Hold a shortcut or the fn/Globe key, speak, and let go: the recognised text is pasted into the active text field of any app. Double-tapping fn starts hands-free dictation.

Recognition runs entirely on the Mac using Parakeet Ultra as Core ML on the Neural Engine, with Apple's on-device recogniser as a fallback. There is no account, no cloud and no tracking, and it works offline after a one-time model download of about 630 MB. Recordings and dictations are not stored.

It supports German, English and both mixed in one sentence. Custom replacements fix names and technical terms, and the voice commands "new line" and "new paragraph" insert line breaks. inlaut does plain dictation only: there is no AI rewriting and no file or meeting transcription.

Requires a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS 26 or later. Licensed under GPL-3.0.
