FAQ
Will an iOS version be available?
No. Due to technical limitations, iOS does not allow third‑party apps to write to the SMS database, which is a core function of IM2SMS.
Why export to SMS?
SMS is a universal, device‑native format. By converting chat histories to SMS, you get a durable, open‑standard backup that isn’t locked into a single proprietary app. This gives users the freedom to:
• Keep conversations even if they stop using an IM service.
• Easily migrate message history to a new phone or a different messaging app that supports SMS import.
• Maintain a unified, searchable message history directly in the phone’s default messaging app.
In short, IM2SMS empowers users to own and control their personal conversation data.
Why the name?
The name stands for Instant Messenger to SMS and was chosen for clarity and searchability. The app was originally intended to be named WhatsApp2SMS, but after Facebook took action against apps using variations of "WhatsApp" in their names (such as the takedown of Watomatic), the name was changed to IM2SMS. This also reflects the app’s broader support for multiple IM platforms beyond WhatsApp.
Can group chats be imported?
For now, only previewing a group chat is possible due to the way SMS apps handle group chats. RCS, which aims to replace SMS, is in development, so full group chat import may become possible in the future.
