What is hako-code?

hako-code is a terminal coding agent written in a single C99 file. It builds with gcc and needs only curl on the PATH: no Node, no Python, no package manager.

75-second tour: https://youtu.be/w7RVMyE5e80

It runs offline on local models through its own C inference engine (hakm), or against 14 cloud providers including Anthropic, OpenRouter, GitHub Copilot, GitHub Models, Ollama and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.

Every tool call is permission-gated, and a project's own config can't change endpoints, keys or auto-approve. It supports Agent Skills and MCP, streams tool calls, and compacts long sessions.

It runs on macOS, Linux, FreeBSD and Windows, and on an iPhone inside iSH. It ships with a built-in tool-call benchmark (hako --bench).
