Comments and Reviews

 Post comment/review
Comment summary: Hangouts receives mixed reviews with some users praising its speed and integration with other Google apps, proving faster than Skype or WhatsApp for messaging. However, complaints include its intrusive nature on devices, missing features like file transfers and limited support for multimedia such as GIFs and emojis. Users also express frustration over Google's removal of functions from Google Talk and its consumption of data. Hangouts' functionality in work settings is appreciated, though limitations are evident.

I rarely use it, mainly for work conferences. Doesn't crash, doesn't freeze. Everything suits me.

Google Hangouts is suddenly consuming 7 MB per day over mobile connection. To send a few plain text messages? It's ridiculous. I turned off the "Improve Hangouts" option but it didn't help.

This doesn't seem to happen anymore, but it's a bit dirty that Google embraced, extended and extinguished other chat protocols like AIM. It used to use an open-source protocol but then Google decided the walled garden would make them more money? Sigh.

Among my favorite chat clients, it’s really a shame that google is going to discontinue it at the end of 2021.

It was the easiest way to sync messages across all operating systems and mobile devices.

I still use hangouts, but I find it severely lacking in several aspects:

  • no dark mode
  • sub-par emojis and stickers
  • no search function for emoji's
  • no GIF functionality
  • no file transfer functionality
  • heavily compresses/resizes JPG
  • used to support phone SMS, but that functionality has since been dropped. (App still notifies me on non-SMS tablet devices).
  • should be merged or integrated with Google Voice. Google voice will send text and voicemail to hangouts, but you cannot use hangouts to send text or call using google voice. You can use the Hangouts Dialer (now abandonware) app to call using google voice, but that is yet another app you have to install.

Simply works - on desktop in browser and on mobile phone. No chat however.

What is Hangouts?

Hangouts is a messaging app that lets you send and receive messages, photos and more, and even start free video and voice calls – one to one or with a group!

"Hangouts" are places used to facilitate group video chat (with a maximum of 10 people participating in a single Hangout at any point in time).

Within the 10 person limit participants may use voice only phones to dial in to the hangout instead of the desktop or mobile video chat feature.

On a desktop or laptop environment hangouts also contain the integration of group chat, Google document sharing, and synchronous viewing of YouTube videos.
