Community led and not controlled by a for-profit. Forgejo is the successor to Gitea.

Forked from Gitea in late 2022 (when Gitea was acquired by a private company). It aims to maintain and improve the already fantastic solution that was Gitea, protected and driven by a non-profit. Best used with Codeberg.

Forgejo is NOT independently developed, but takes (FOSS) work from the Gitea developers and removes any credit to the original authors. The forgejo 'team' is essentially white-labeling the honest open-source efforts of the Gitea developers. This might be legally allowed for open-source code, but it's morally despicable.
