. As a back up, Genie Timeline, has many useful features. It's clean, easy to use and once installed and quick instructions selected, takes care of itself without additional user attention. I liked that, Set it and forget it.
Unfortunately, this nice program has a 'MAJOR' shortcoming, and 'must have', for a back up program to be considered, 'Ready for Prime Time', and that is, it does not synchronize backup's.
As a result, I do not recommend, till it does include a sync feature.
For an alternative, I've been test driving several other [Backup & Sync] programs, and ran across one named: Created Synchronicity, that looks promising; backs up and synchronizes. My only disappointment is, that it only offers 'incremental' , rather than 'differential' syn's, which are much less prone to errors. To overcome this shortcoming, I will admit, it does make fast 'mirror' backups with ease, and till I find something better [free or paid], I'll be using it to back up and synchronize my files. - 03Dec2013[XPsp2] .
I've been trialling the latest version (Genie Timeline Professional 10), and must say that I am very impressed. I am using it as a Windows File History replacement, and use Macrium Reflect for nightly system images.

This is the old version, i've recently upgraded to Genie timeline 2012 great new features! specially the metro user interface
I've been trialling Genie Timeline Professional 10 and I'm very disappointed with it. Having a couple of issues that make it unusable. I've contacted their support twice and have had no response. The issues are as follows... 1) It tells me my backup drive is full when it isn't 2) When I pause a backup it fails to resume - it either crashes or gets stuck trying to resume the backup. Very poor indeed. This is definetly NOT an alternative to the awesome Timemachine!
I just started using Genie Timeline Home 10. It seems it will let you just back up just the Windows OS, or the desktop, though you have more standard options as well, but I haven't quite seen that.. perhaps I'm mixing options, though extra stuff can be deleted. You have the option to compress files, pause/resume. The Timeline Genie is somewhat intrusive, and I'm not sure how to shut it off yet.. I put a usb drive in and Timeline shows automatically in the file set. Also the pop-up alert if it's been a while from backing that I'm not sure if I can shut off.

Recently had a serious problem with win2008 SBS and Genie timeline, have been trying to resolve this problem (software was crashing in the middle of backup) for a weeks. Support from genie was terrible, we been chasing them every day...eventually, after month of silly games with genie we have moved to another backup solution.
