What is gene-archive?

gene-archive is an MIT-licensed generator for family history websites. It combines an interactive family tree, person cards linked to documentary sources, an archive of scans and photographs with PDF previews, family narratives and a places map.

Research data is stored in one JSON file, with GEDCOM import and export for exchanging data with other genealogy programs. The interface supports English, Russian and Romanian. Generated static HTML can be published on GitHub Pages or any web server without a database.

An optional Python server adds relatives' comments, correction proposals and an online editor with editor/administrator roles, validation and change history in git. Requires Python 3.10+. English and Russian documentation and a demonstration using a fictional family are available in the repository.
