I am a light user, not a project manager. and I have used this software for personal project.

Here are what I have felt about GanttProject.

Good

  • Keyboard friendly : can do many things with keyboard without using mouse.
  • Easy to Use : Learing curve is very low in my opinion.
  • Clean design : may not beautiful UI but neat and clean.
  • Work very smooth and stable
  • Open Source

Bad

  • Duration, Can not be set a duration less than a day. there are so many requests about this feature on the forum, but the developer seems not interested in adding "hour" duration.

As a light user using this for only personal project, This software is very very good. but if the developer would add hour based duration, It would be much better than now.

@ sanghoonpark @TheWorld The duration less than a day (MISSING) "feature" is a total and utter dealbreaker.

It has been debated/requested/IGNORED for over 12 years, as follows:-

Why on earth anyone/everyone would NOT want tasks with a duration of LESS THAN A DAY is beyond me.

Totally useless utility.

  • There is no possibility to make the duration in hours.
  • The timeline is always on top.
  • Strange texture on the left side that cannot be removed.
  • Interface graphics from 2007, no animation or anything like that.
  • Nazi flag at startup and in the main program menu. This utility should be consigned to oblivion.

Good:

  • Free and open source (Please donate something to the devs, even a small amount)
  • Desktop cross-platform
  • GANNT Chart support
  • Good for personal projects or as a starting options to new teams
  • Best of all free GANTT creation apps
  • Can open MS Project files Bad:
  • UI Dated
  • Manual and Example given are pretty much required to get started
  • Lacks some advanced features of paid apps (but hey its FOSS)

GanttProject is in my opinion the best option I've seen to replace Microsoft Project. I have used it at work and home and find it to be intuitive and a joy to use. Of course there is still room for improvement but there has been steady progress through the years, and the team behind it are to be commended.

If you have a small business or like to make Gantt charts at home or work, this is a great tool. The fact that the software is allowed to be used for free even in commercial settings is a huge plus.

There is nothing wrong with the requests for small donations, this is no different than say LibreOffice asking for money. They have a very decent, stable and usable alternative to the costly MS Project, so give them a donation if possible.

I hope to see more progress coming in the future. Excellent free software. One of my favorites.

GanttProject is a cross-platform desktop tool for project scheduling and management. It runs on Windows, Linux and MacOSX, it is free and its code is opensource. What can it do?

  • Gantt chart. - Create work breakdown structure, draw dependencies, define milestones.
  • Resources. - Assign human resources to work on tasks, see their allocation on the Resource Load chart.
  • PERT chart. - Generate PERT chart from Gantt chart.
