What is Fraps?
Fraps is a universal Windows application that can be used with games using DirectX or OpenGL graphic technology. In its current form Fraps performs many tasks and can best be described as:
Benchmarking Software - Show how many Frames Per Second (FPS) you are getting in a corner of your screen.
Screen Capture Software - Take a screenshot with the press of a key!
Realtime Video Capture Software - Have you ever wanted to record video while playing your favourite game? Fraps can capture audio and video up to 2560x1600 with custom frame rates from 10 to 100 frames per second!

Comments and Reviews
Actually, Fraps still has its uses for recording videogame footage. It can detect games that other programs just cannot. Mostly happens with older DirectX applications.
You can compress and transcode the AVI footage to MP4 with Handbrake/Avidemux, and then losslessly splice them together in one long video using MP4 Tools.
Used to be most popular video capture apps, but it Doesn’t convert video, RAW only, so the file will appear very big because it is on original quality
Very limited and overpriced as of 2021.
Surely abandoned by devs.
I was planning on buying a license for Fraps, but then I noticed that the last update is from February 2013, which makes me a bit uncertain. Does anybody know about the status and future of the project?
Not that I think the program is in dire need of any improvements or bugfixes. But almost two years without an update is a long time, especially for a program that used to be updated quite regularly (usually at least once a month, and never a gap longer than 6). Also, the last version number "3.5.99" looks like it was supposed to be the last release before a bigger update.
As the price is relatively high, I would hesitate a bit to register a software when maybe I'll soon no longer be able to get any support.
I know I'm replying to a post that's several months old, but I would avoid this software. You are correct the last version is 3.5.99, released Feb. 2013. I have read many reviews that support does not exist anymore, in the fact that they don't reply to inquiries to the web-form submissions on their web site, as that is the only way to contact them.
I think this might have been a sole-developer project and it either was abandoned or the developer vanished.
Is there an alternative to Fraps Open Source? Only need to measure the FPS. Please help.
Speaking of this. MSI Afterburner should be listed as alternative as fps measure is one of main Fraps functionality. MSI Afterburner is often used for that as well.
Have you ever tried Acethinker Screen Recorder Online? A free web-based app that can record screen right from your web browser, it's a good alternative to Fraps.
Very useful but has two problems as far as I am concerned. First, it splits files at 4 GB even on NTFS. Second, I wouldn't mind some compression options for those of us that would like to sacrifice a little CPU to decrease file sizes. Perhaps compression is a pipe dream even on a modern quad-core ... I don't know.
