If you are looking for a proper tool to work with data and SQL queries with ad-hoc visual query builder, you must have a look at FlySpeed SQL Query. It connects to all modern database servers and works with all popular desktop databases and office file formats (CSV, Excel).

Great Program. Runs on Linux using WINE. Drivers for MS SQL server are a little more complicated.
It has an intuitive visual query builder and it can represent SQL queries visually making theem easy to understand and modify.
It is free if you don't need export and printing, and it has good visual SQL query builder which can show the diagram of existing queries.
There's only a little problem with FlySpeed. It does not have a SQL Editor where you can type something like this simple query:
-- example query -- SET @a := 1; SELECT @a; -- ends example query --
I like this app because it has a query builder more stable than MySql-Front (another great alternative I will add later). So I'll use MySql-Front again in the future for its SQL Editor in which you can write vars and see directly your query results.
When FlySpeed will provide this feature, my thumbs will up.

We will change this in one of the upcoming versions. For now you can hold the Ctrl while clicking the Execute button or just press the Cttrl+F5 keys to execute such scripts.
Thank you for the tips!
I like that this tool can work with MS Access and MySQL databases without any client software installed. I mean that you don't have to install MS Access itself or MySQL connector to work with these databases. I have a great experiance in SQL, so I dont need the Visual Query Builder to edit my queries, but I noticed that it is convenient to analyze the existing queries.
