FinExplorer

Excel add-in that traces precedents and dependents across sheets and breaks nested formulas apart, for people reviewing financial and valuation models they did not build.

Tracing a formula on a DCF sheet: the panel lists both precedents of the selected cell with their live values, and a double-click keeps tracing up the chain.

What is FinExplorer?

FinExplorer is a Windows add-in for Microsoft Excel that helps you understand and navigate financial models you did not build. It traces precedents and dependents across worksheets and across workbooks, so you can follow a number back to its source without losing your place. It breaks a nested formula into its component parts and shows what each part evaluates to, which makes long IF / INDEX / MATCH formulas readable. Its Formula Map colour-codes a whole sheet by the role of each cell — unique formulas, copied ranges, hardcoded inputs and links to other workbooks — so the shape of a model is visible at a glance. It compares two sheets with automatic row and column alignment, so an inserted row reads as one change instead of a cascade of false differences. It is built for people who review DCF, LBO, budget and valuation models rather than for general spreadsheet users. It installs without administrator rights, which matters on locked-down corporate laptops, and runs entirely on the local machine — no workbook content is uploaded anywhere. The licence is annual, per user, for one computer, and can be moved to a different computer. Built by a practising financial model auditor.
