Comment summary: Everything stands out as a popular and highly efficient search tool for Windows, lauded for its speed and low resource consumption. Many users appreciate its quick indexing and ability to find files faster than the default Windows search function. While the lack of file content indexing and some stability issues have been noted, the majority view it as indispensable for managing large volumes of files efficiently. Users express a desire for development improvements, such as a dark mode and better database management.

Everything is a must-have app that does what it says it does in a clear, simple, flexible and very efficient way. Anybody working with a large number of files spread out in multiple directories will find benefit in using Everything.

How to use it:

  1. Say you're looking for a file called "My_presentation_20180101.pptx", but you can't remember where you saved it (or even if that's what it's really called).
  2. Open Everything
  3. Every file on your computer is shown in a list
  4. Start typing a few letters, e.g. "prese"...
  5. As you type, Everything will reduce the number of items shown in the list to match what you typed
  6. If you can't remember whether you used underscores or spaces in the file name, add another search term, e.g. "presen 2018"
  7. Again Everything will narrow the list to all files that match the word "presen" AND "2018"
  8. You can also exclude terms. Say you don't want those files containing the word "media", add the "!" exclude search term, e.g. "presen 2018 !media"
  9. Again the list narrows

Very useful. Instantaneous. Small memory footprint. Not processor intensive. Lots of options.

No it does not search inside files, nor does it claim to do so, nor do I need it too do so ; that would make it too heavy and slow for my use.

Thanks Everything!

2022 update: Everything is still an essential tool for my everyday needs and is still unmatched by Windows' search capacities (which are nowhere near as useful as Everything).

Still a must have in 2025 !

This app would be my go-to search if it didn't routinely overwrite and destroy its own database settings. No point to this app for me if I can't specify which parts of my drives I want indexed.

Pal Tauszig

you can specify which part of your drive to index: tools\ options\ indexes\ \ \ include only...

If you configure it to index folder size, you have something faster than WizTree.

Version 1.5 (currently alpha 1390a) adds a folder sidebar treeview so you can narrow down the results faster.

A little setup (most of these settings are in version 1.5+)

In advanced options, always_keep_sort = true.

In main window, the results can be sorted by size, largest first.

In View menu, Sort By can be set to Mix Files and Folders. Alternatively search filter can be changed to Folders.

Folders sidebar can be enabled in View menu.

In the folders sidebar, you can uncheck Subfolders if you wish.

Trade-offs

+ index updated in real-time (configurable) + you can type the first letters of folder names in the treeview to overcome lack of sorting by size - no charts to visualise space usage - folders sidebar treeview not sorted by size - no [### files in Folder]

Are you from the future? Where do you see 1.5 lol

Great piece of software. Faster and better search than windows 10 default search especially for external hard drives, It can find duplicate items i tried it with mp4 files and images and it did work fine.

Has significantly improved the QoL of windows, and is one of the few programs i insist people install.

What is Everything?

"Everything" is an administrative tool that locates files and folders by filename instantly for Windows. Unlike Windows search "Everything" initially displays every file and folder on local or removable NTFS volumes on your computer (hence the name "Everything"), and on mapped network drives with ETP server and an everything installation too. You type in a search filter to limit what files and folders are displayed. 19 languages supported.

How can "Everything" index a mapped network drive? To search a networked computer you will need to run Everything on both computers. One computer will need to Start an ETP server. The other computer will need to connect to that ETP server.

To start an ETP server:

  1. In Everything, On the Tools menu, click Start ETP server.

To connect to an ETP server:

  1. In Everything, On the Tools menu, click Connect to ETP Server....
  2. Type in the ETP server name.
  3. Type in the ETP server port.
  4. Type in the ETP server user.
  5. Type in the ETP server password.
  6. Click OK.
