What is eTools.ch?
eTools.ch is a so-called metasearch engine or federated search, that simultaneously searches major Swiss and international search engines, merges their results and shows them relevance-sorted in a concise form.
In general, eTools.ch tries to return the most exact and relevant results for a given search expression: less is more!
Besides further search-specific functionalities, eTools.ch focuses on a convenient and fast metasearch over selected search engines.
eTools.ch also can be accessed by the domain names metasearch.ch or sucher.ch.
How Does eTools.ch Work? The metasearch engine eTools.ch has no own index or database – instead the information is retrieved from several data sources simultaneously (federated search, search several search engines at once).
eTools.ch search process overview In the optimal case, eTools.ch receives a result from every data source within the timeout period. Afterwards these results are processed, merged and returned to the user.
In simplified terms, the following steps are performed:
The user enters the search terms and search options and starts the search. The search parameters get translated for each data source individually. All selected data sources are queried simultaneously. The returned results of every data source are transformed into a standardized format and optionally filtered. The individual results are merged into a common result:
- redundant information is removed
- relevant information is weighted (ranking) and sorted The merged result is returned to the user.
Comments and Reviews
In this modern time of "personalized" search results has, in my experience, made searching better about 20% of the time, sucky 70% of the time, and completely and utterly useless and infuriating at least 10% of the time. Whoogle anonymizes you for google, but doesnt bypass censorship. Searx was the best metasearch, but git abandoned and replaced with Searxng, which just isnt as good. Kagi is great, but not free. And 4get is useless.
Ehtools ive used for a year or so, and its a breath of fresh air. Its not perfect, but seems to pull up international, unbiased results in ways that none of the other main players can. A true hidden gem in the search engine arena.
