What is Envelop Budget?
Envelop is a web-based personal budgeting application built on the zero-based envelope method. Money is divided into envelopes, each representing a category or job, and every dollar of available funds is assigned to an envelope until nothing is left unallocated. It runs in a web browser and is a paid subscription service.
Envelop does not connect to bank accounts and does not import transactions automatically. Users enter and approve each transaction manually. Because there is no bank connection, the app does not require bank login credentials or access to third-party financial data feeds.
Accounts can be on-budget (checking, savings, or credit card) or off-budget (tracked but not budgeted, such as investment accounts). Envelopes are organized into groups, and unspent balances roll over from one month to the next, which can be turned off per envelope. Supported transaction types include expenses, income, transfers between accounts, refunds, credit-card reward credits, split transactions across multiple envelopes, and reconciliation adjustments. Credit cards use a payment envelope that sets aside money as you spend, so the balance owed is tracked against funds already budgeted. Off-budget credit cards also receive a payment envelope.
Recurring transactions can be scheduled at weekly, biweekly, twice-monthly, monthly, or yearly intervals, and can either post automatically or prompt for confirmation when the amount varies. Any envelope can hold one or more savings goals, each with a target amount and date, and the app calculates the monthly, weekly, and daily contribution needed to reach it. Overspending in an envelope can be covered by moving money from another envelope or from unallocated funds. Accounts can be reconciled against a bank statement, with an optional labeled adjustment transaction to resolve a remaining difference. Reports include income versus spending, net worth across all accounts, spending by category, budgeted versus actual, and a cash-flow forecast. Currency and date format are configurable.
A budget can be shared with up to four other people, each using their own login at no extra cost. Invited members can view and edit the shared budget; only the owner can invite or remove members.
Envelop can import existing budgets from YNAB and Actual Budget. The entire budget can be exported to a file at any time as a full backup and re-imported to restore it, so data is not locked into the service.
Pricing is $5 per month or $55 per year, with a 14-day free trial that does not require a credit card.
