What is Encyclopædia Britannica?
The Encyclopædia Britannica is a general English-language encyclopaedia published by Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., a privately-held company. The articles in the Britannica are aimed at educated adult readers, and written by a staff of about 100 full-time editors and over 4,000 expert contributors. It is widely regarded as the most scholarly of encyclopaedias. Software versions include Britannica Ultimate Reference CD or DVD, Britannica Deluxe CD or DVD and Britannica Online.

A great alternative, I would actually go so far to say it is taking Wikipedia's place. Britannica is very well written. Articles are very dry, which is good, because it means you get actual knowledge, and not just what you want to hear. This website should be right up there along Wikipedia in Search Results. Their article on the Crusades is a great read.
Tired of your teacher? Use Britannica. What they can respond with, when your response is: My source is Britannica.com - and not Wikipedia.
They don't show authors or copyright holder which makes their articles difficult to screenshot or cite without breaking copyright laws nearly every time...
Wanting to do most of my research online and avoid Wikipedia, I signed up for a year of Brittanica Online. I was able to use it a little, but it wasn't extensive enough to really serve as a main reference tool for me. Wikipedia is far more in depth (although possibly at the cost of accuracy). Brittanica Online feels like something I would definately use if I was in junior high, though. For a general, non-Wikipedia resource, the free encyclopedia.com is just as good if not better.
