What is DocumentDB for VS Code?
DocumentDB for VS Code is an open source extension that brings DocumentDB and MongoDB development directly into Visual Studio Code. Connect to any MongoDB API database, browse data, run queries, and optimize performance without leaving the editor.
It works across cloud, self hosted, and local databases, including DocumentDB, MongoDB Atlas, Azure Cosmos DB for MongoDB, AWS DocumentDB, and local emulators.
Developers can discover and connect to clusters, browse and edit documents, write and run queries, optimize performance, and migrate collections without leaving the editor or installing separate command line tools.
Selected features:
- Three linked query surfaces: a visual Collection View, a JavaScript Query Playground, and an interactive shell.
- Schema aware autocompletion for field names, operators, and values.
- Zero install runtime with no external mongosh, working with Entra ID authentication.
- Service discovery for Azure, MongoDB Atlas, local emulators, and Kubernetes with automatic port forwarding.
- AI powered Query Insights with explain plans and index recommendations.
- Copy and paste collections across servers and databases, plus full index and import and export management.
DocumentDB for VS Code is free and open source, under the MIT license.
