Deskthaw is a free menu bar app for Mac, currently available in open public beta with no sign-up or invitation required. You pick what gets stiff (neck, shoulders and upper back, or lower back) and how often, and when a move is due it checks three things on your Mac: whether the camera or mic is live, whether a meeting app is in front, and whether an app is fullscreen. If any of them is true it waits. Otherwise it shows one move in a small panel, done sitting down, a minute or less, with a drawing and a timer.
An hour on calls counts as an hour at the desk. Hang up and a move shows up about 30 seconds later.
There are six moves in the beta, five from NHS pages and one from Mayo Clinic. It has no dashboard, it’s a menu bar icon, a menu, the move panel and a settings window. It asks for no camera, microphone, screen or accessibility permission.
The beta is free to download, signed and notarized, requires macOS 13 or later, and has been tested on macOS 26 on Apple silicon. Each build stops working 45 days after you first open it.
