Database Note Taker
Now FREE. A simple and powerful database documentation tool for sql server and mysql databases. It shows all your tables and fields, highlights the documentation status ...
What is Database Note Taker?
Free alternative to paid database documentation tools, Database Note Taker makes it easy for developers to capture and share knowledge about databases, simplify database documentation processes, and take the guess work out of every day development with databases. So much information about your databases is in code or your developer's heads. Now it's easy to record that somewhere. Being this simple, documentation will actually get done!
With support for markdown syntax you can make your notes more powerful. DNT allows small - or large notes - include examples if you like. Include more than you can fit in a tiny sql server comments field!
Database documentation does not need to be difficult. Database Note Taker makes it easy to connect to your database, see what you are yet to document, record some notes, and then publish those notes so everyone can know what your database objects do.
Unlike other tools, the documentation is stored in source control friendly files, so you can keep your documentation separate to the database and in source control along with your application source. The export is simple via XSL to html ready to send, include in a word document or put on a portal or wherever you like.
Also quicker to find the basic details of a table or field than firing up sql management studio. Run DNT, it remembers the last database you had looked at, just type into the filter and it shows matching tables. Easy as pie.

- agilitisoftware commented on Database Note TakeragWe've been using Database Note Taker to document our sql server databases. It's easy to set up and easy for team members to share their documentation notes - in a single or multiple files which we pop in source control so we have a record of those. We prefer the documentation to be separate to the actual database. We don't need the relationships because those are obvious - we just need notes for what each field does and this tool does it. And we can see what's been documented and what has not so a developer can easily see what needs attention if they have spare time. Plus is publishes to a html page we can use our own xml stylesheet to customise that and we can easily send that to customers or print to pdf. Too easy.
