coreboot is described as '(formerly known as LinuxBIOS) is a free software project aimed at replacing the proprietary BIOS firmware found in most computers with a lightweight system designed to perform only the minimum of tasks necessary to load and run a modern 32-bit or 64-bit operating system' and is an app. There are eight alternatives to coreboot for a variety of platforms, including Linux, Mac, Windows, BSD and Chrome OS. The best alternative is GRUB, which is both free and Open Source. Other great apps like coreboot are Libreboot, Das U-Boot, SeaBios and gummiboot.

    SeaBios allows you to boot from other bootable devices, unlike Coreboot. I own a Chromebook, but I wasn't able to boot my USB's from it. So I put my Chromebook into developer mode and installed SeaBios! My USB's are working fine now!
