What is CoMaps?
Discover more of your journey – Powered by the community
🗺? About CoMaps CoMaps is a new community-driven map app project born out of the desire to create a truly open, transparent, and community-focused navigation app. Our goal is to provide easy, offline navigation for travelers, drivers, hikers, and cyclists, all while respecting user privacy and supporting open-source collaboration.
We believe that the best navigation app should be:
- Free
- Open-source
- Built by and for the community
- Privacy respecting
🤔? Why CoMaps? The CoMaps project was initiated in response to the growing concerns and dissatisfaction with the Organic Maps project leadership. The original Organic Maps project, while initially promoted as an open community effort, faced significant issues related to governance, transparency, and the potential for shareholder profit at the expense of the community. These concerns were detailed in the Open Letter to Organic Maps Shareholders. Despite some positive steps, the lack of a substantive resolution has led us to establish a new, independent path: CoMaps.
🌟 Our Vision & Principles CoMaps envisions a future where navigation tools are free, open, privacy-respecting and community driven. We believe in software that serves the public good, that is free from trackers and ads, transparent and accessible.
Our core principles:
- Transparency: All decisions, financial info and other data are transparent and accessible to everyone.
- Open Source: The complete codebase and associated resources are released under Free and Open Source Software licenses.
- Community-first: Development is guided by the needs and input of users, contributors, and volunteers.
- Privacy-focused: No tracking, no data collection, no ads - ever.
- Not-for-profit: The project operates for the public good, focusing on creating value for the community rather than generating profit for shareholders, investors or corporations.
- Community funded: There are no investors that invest money into the app, just people like you that support the app with a donation.
?? Highlights
- Offline-first: Navigate without a connection
- Privacy-respecting: No tracking, ads or data collection
- Lightweight: Battery- and space-efficient
- Simple: Polished, user-focused interface
- Cross-platform: Available for Android, iOS, MacOS, and Linux.
- Community-built: Free, open source, and collaborative
- Transparent: Open finances and governance
Freedom Is Here – Navigate the world with privacy and community at the forefront.

Comments and Reviews
I like CoMaps and it's community-driven approach, and for data privacy. Full transparency on how the app is developed.
Best foss maps app there is!
Much better than OM and Maps.Me. The Map Color change is very good IMO!
Navigation can sometimes be a bit glitchy, but at least they are working on it :)
It's essentially Organic Maps with worse colors, making it harder to see roads and trails.
I often go hiking and use CoMaps to get to the right route. I used OrganicMaps for a long time, but after I heard that there are some transparency problems, I switched to CoMaps. The map looks great and the navigation is also very accurate. I really like to use CoMaps and can recommend it!
Works great on iOS & Android, team makes it very easy to contribute
Better than Organic Map. The app is changing to Material 3 Design. It is completely open source.
