What is Capture (For Therapists)?
Capture is an Android practice management app for independent mental health professionals who want full control over their clinical records. Everything lives on the therapist's device; there is no Capture server and no subscription account.
WHAT IT DOES
- Full client records: case histories, session notes, treatment goals, attachments, audio recordings and PDF exports.
- Process-Based Therapy: per-client process monitoring with check-ins, rolling baselines, trend charts and alerts when a process drops. Includes 66 evidence-based intervention kernels across 12 processes, plus a 5-section PBT formulation editor.
- Standardised assessments: ORS and SRS in a client-handoff mode that hides therapist controls. Also PHQ-9, GAD-7 and others. Scores attach to the session and feed trend charts.
- Scheduling with smart alerts for clients not seen recently.
- Per-client payment and fee tracking.
- PDF exports with two-step password-protected sharing; channel and recipient logged for disclosure accounting.
- Per-client consents for Privacy Notice, Treatment, Audio Recording and Telehealth.
PRIVACY AND SECURITY
Capture is HIPAA-aligned, not HIPAA-compliant: compliance is achieved by the practice, not by an app. Capture implements the technical safeguards from 45 CFR Sec. 164.312:
- AES-256 database encryption at rest (SQLCipher); passphrase wrapped with an AES-256 GCM key in the Android Keystore.
- Biometric unlock with device-credential fallback; the app refuses to start without a lock screen.
- 15-minute inactivity re-lock in foreground and after backgrounding, including on ORS/SRS handoff screens.
- One-shot biometric prompt for sensitive actions such as Wipe All Data.
- Activity audit log of creates, edits, deletes, views, exports, backups, restores, sign-ins and wipes. Exportable as CSV; a Wipe will not proceed until a CSV copy is written.
- Backups are AES-256 encrypted on device using a PBKDF2-derived key from a backup PIN Capture does not store. Destination is the therapist's choice: a local folder or their own Google Drive.
- Templates for HIPAA documents the practice has to produce (Notice of Privacy Practices, breach notification, contingency plan, risk analysis). Delivery and sign-off remain the therapist's responsibility.
- If Google Drive is used, the BAA requirement attaches to Google; whether a given account qualifies is for the therapist to verify directly with Google. The local-folder option avoids this entirely.
- Anonymous usage analytics only, never including client content. Opt-out clears the analytics profile immediately.
WHO IT IS FOR
Independent therapists, counsellors, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists in solo or small practice who want clinical data on a device they control, an audit trail they can hand over, and clinical tooling (PBT, ORS/SRS, formulation, longitudinal goal tracking) beyond generic note-taking.
Android. Offline-first. Optional backup to Google Drive or a local folder. Distributed via Google Play.
