ByteSync information
What is ByteSync?
ByteSync is a free and open-source software designed for secure and efficient file synchronization and backup across multiple computers. Instead of copying entire files, ByteSync compares data at the block level and transfers only the differences, saving time and bandwidth while ensuring precise synchronization.
Thanks to its decentralized architecture, each instance analyzes its own data locally before cooperating with others through a lightweight orchestration layer. This design enables powerful multi-site synchronization, remote backups, and data deduplication, all without requiring VPNs, port forwarding, or complex network setup.
Every exchange is protected with end-to-end encryption, guaranteeing full confidentiality and integrity. ByteSync runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, offering a seamless experience for both individuals and teams managing distributed files, codebases, or large datasets.
With its intuitive interface and flexible synchronization rules, ByteSync gives you complete control over your backups and transfers — from quick comparisons to complex multi-node workflows. Whether you’re syncing projects between offices or maintaining secure archives, ByteSync makes it effortless, fast, and reliable.

Crashes when I load C drive as directory, but FreeFileSync can handle it.
Thanks for the report. Actually, there are two problems here: first, a crash when selecting the root of a drive. This issue is currently being fixed. Second, there is a known limitation when scanning protected directories without admin privileges. I've created GitHub issue #229 (https://github.com/POW-Software/ByteSync/issues/229) to track this. I plan to allow the inventory to continue scanning accessible paths while tracking inaccessible directories for exclusion from sync. This will be addressed in a future release.
