What is Besprited?

Besprited is a free and open-source editor for drawing and animating pixel art and 2D sprites. It continues the lineage of Aseprite’s last GPLv2 release through LibreSprite, with a faster release cycle focused on closing the feature gap to modern pixel-art tools.

Work is organized in layers and frames with real-time animation preview, onion skinning, frame tags and per-frame durations. Pixel-precise tools include a stabilized pencil for clean lines, shading ink, custom brushes, symmetry, RotSprite rotation, blend modes and a tiling mode for seamless patterns and textures.

Besprited opens and saves Aseprite .ase/.aseprite files (some newer Aseprite features are not supported yet), and imports/exports GIF, PNG (including numbered sequences), sprite sheets with JSON data, WebP, QOI, BMP, TGA, PCX, ICO and FLI/FLC.

It can be extended with JavaScript scripts (QuickJS engine) and themed with custom skins and fonts, including LibreSprite-compatible themes. Releases are GPG-signed and available as an installer or portable zip for Windows, Intel and Apple Silicon builds for macOS, and AppImage, .deb, .rpm and .tar.gz packages for Linux.
