This is a list of Alternative and Open Source Android Apps and OS I could recommend because I use most of them since November 2013 under Paranoid Android with a Nexus 5.
Most of these apps are available via F-Droid.
And when alternative don't exist and/or it not available via F-Droid, Aptoide and/or anothers repos; I use https://apps.evozi.com/apk-downloader/ to extract the apk from Google Play.

Good: Open source A lot of applications use this as the go to scanner, so it has that going for it.
Bad: Ugly UI. Doesn't rotate.
It's 2.36 MB and keeps it's function simple. Doesn't do much else other then scan, which I love.
Definitely the best QR Code Scanning app for Android!
With the exception of some packing labels I've come across, there's no bar codes this thing can't read and interprit. Amazing. Use it with Barcode Generator (also free and partially open source) to expand communication between devices.
