switched to it from proton mail, it's by far the best email provider i've used. the free tier is extremely generous, the UI is good, it's cross platform, it has built-in aliases and free custom domain support. made an account just to leave this review lmao, it really is that good

What is Aster Mail?

Aster Mail is private, encrypted email that's free to use. Your mail is encrypted before it's stored, so nobody at Aster can read it, scan it, or show you ads based on it.

Private by design

  • End-to-end encryption between Aster accounts, applied on your device before a message leaves it
  • Post-quantum protection that pairs an elliptic-curve key exchange with ML-KEM-768 (FIPS 203)
  • Zero-access storage, so mail from other providers is encrypted the moment it arrives
  • No ads, no tracking, and no analytics
  • Tracking pixels and remote images blocked before they load

Standard OpenPGP

  • Encrypted mail to anyone who has published a PGP key, found for you through WKD and key servers
  • Keys you can export and use in GPG or any other OpenPGP app

Aliases and custom domains

  • An alias for every site you sign up for, which you can turn off when it starts getting spam
  • Your own domain on every plan, including the free one, with DKIM signing handled for you
  • A catch-all address on paid plans

Everyday mail

  • Folders, labels, inbox categories, and search across your whole mailbox
  • Scheduled send, undo send, snooze, templates, and vacation replies
  • Mail rules that sort incoming messages for you
  • Other accounts added over IMAP or POP3 and read in the same inbox
  • Light mode, dark mode, and color themes
  • Offline access, with your changes synced when you reconnect

Account security

  • Two-factor authentication with an authenticator app or a hardware security key
  • A recovery key that only you hold
  • A list of active sessions, so you can sign out a device you no longer have

Moving in and out

  • Import from another provider, any IMAP account, or an MBOX file
  • Export all of your mail as an MBOX file on every plan
  • Aster Bridge on paid plans, which lets you read your encrypted mail in the mail app you already use

Apps

  • Web, Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android
  • Android builds on Google Play and F-Droid, and the F-Droid build has no Google services
  • Available in 15 languages

Plans

  • Free: 10 GB of encrypted storage, 5 aliases, and 1 custom domain, with no phone number or credit card needed
  • Paid plans start at $2.99 per month and add storage, aliases, domains, and larger attachments

Open source The apps and the cryptography library are open source under AGPL-3.0, so anyone can check what they do. The servers are in Germany, and Aster is funded by subscriptions instead of ads.

Privacy is a right, take it back!
