What is Agent Role Contracts?

Agent Role Contracts is an MIT-licensed open-source Node.js CLI and library for defining and validating authority boundaries between AI agents before they act. It lets teams express explicit role contracts covering agent authority, task and action binding, filesystem-write scope, review separation, handoffs, and task lifecycle rules. The validator reports specific contract violations so conflicts can be detected before work is executed. Version 0.5.0-alpha.1 expands the model with generalized role contracts, task/action binding, filesystem-write adapters, and task lifecycle contracts. It is available as a public preview through the npm next channel and can run locally after installation. Agent Role Contracts focuses on contract definition and pre-execution validation. It does not execute AI agents or replace the underlying runtime, identity system, sandbox, or operating-system permissions.
