postmarketOS rebrands as Nura in move to broaden appeal beyond tech community; keeps logo
In an announcement at their annual conference, the open-source mobile operating system project formerly known as postmarketOS has revealed its new identity: Nura. The name emerged following an extensive one-and-a-half-year selection process, with the team ultimately choosing a moniker they described as easier to write, pronounce, and remember, aiming to expand recognition beyond the traditional hacker community that has supported the project since its inception. The rebranding was first teased in March 2025, though delays due to trademark considerations and the need to build consensus within the community pushed the official reveal to the present day.
The project team emphasized that while the name is changing, core elements of their visual identity remain intact. The distinctive logo featuring interlocking arrows will continue to represent the project, though with refined mathematical precision and improved spacing for better legibility at distance. The new web domain, nura.eco, was selected after attempts to acquire nura.org proved unsuccessful; the .eco extension aligns with the project's environmental mission and carries accountability measures against greenwashing practices. The name “Nura” draws from Nuraghe architecture, ancient stone structures from Sardinia that symbolize enduring construction and community-building, a metaphor the developers find fitting for their long-term sustainability goals. While “postmarketOS” retains historical significance, the team believes this strategic repositioning will help the project reach wider audiences seeking ethical, privacy-focused mobile computing solutions.
