Calibre 9.15 launches with new AI-powered “Create your own adventure” writing game
Calibre, the widely-used open-source e-book management software, has released a new update introducing an experimental AI-driven storytelling feature alongside refinements to its e-book viewer and content server. Titled “Create your own adventure”, the optional writing game allows users to craft interactive stories with an AI managing the evolving narrative world. The feature is deliberately kept separate from core functionality, accessible only through explicit opt-in via the settings.
The update delivers meaningful improvements to the reading experience. Users can now select multiple highlights in the e-book viewer and right-click to change their styles collectively, while hovering over highlighted text displays embedded notes as tooltips. The cover grid receives customization options, including control over which corner emblems occupy and whether text renders flush with the bottom of covers. A new sidebar button enables quick switching between saved window sizes, addressing workflow flexibility for power users. Additional CLI enhancements allow adding and deleting books from system temp directories through command-line execution.
Bug fixes span multiple platforms and formats. The read aloud feature now properly handles full-screen images and maintains text visibility in flow mode, while DOCX output preserves hyperlinks across styled text runs and DOCX input correctly processes documents with numbering but no styles. Windows users benefit from timezone handling fixes affecting regions like Alberta, Canada, and the content server sanitizes supplied conversion options to prevent potential injection issues. As with all Calibre releases, the full changelog remains available on the project website, documenting dozens of improvements spanning the latest development cycle.
