Appwrite 2.0 adds direct databases, S3 storage and OAuth

Appwrite has announced its major version 2.0, introducing a new engine, a rebuilt Console, five database options, S3 compatible storage, and OAuth 2.1 support. Existing projects continue to work without requiring migration. Storage now includes an S3 compatible API using AWS Signature Version 4, while existing buckets remain accessible through both the native Storage API and the S3 API. Appwrite also adds dedicated PostgreSQL and MySQL engines with standard connections for existing clients, drivers, ORMs, and migration tools. PostgreSQL defaults to version 18, supports extensions such as PostGIS and pgvector, and starts at $10 per month, while VectorsDB adds embedding search and DocumentsDB provides schemaless JSON storage.

Projects can now act as OAuth 2.1 and OpenID Connect providers for third party applications, with support for product hosted consent screens, API based client registration, PKCE, device authorization grants, and discovery documents. Appwrite Cloud also adds Firewall for controlling traffic across APIs, Functions, and Sites, while Domains adds domain registration and DNS management.

Console IV brings project management, documentation, and changelogs into the same interface, while the new Hyperloop B engine moves Appwrite to coroutine scheduling. Appwrite reports around seven times higher throughput on tested I/O bound workloads. Version 2.0 is rolling out on Appwrite Cloud during Init week, with Community Edition following afterward for self hosting, while Domains and Firewall remain Cloud exclusive.
