OpenAI says it will cut off Cursor's access to its AI models starting November 12, 2026

OpenAI says it will wind down its contract to provide AI models to Cursor following Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX, and the breach of the contract's terms. The company proposed November 12, 2026, as the shutoff date for the access to all current and future OpenAI models.

Explaining the decision, OpenAI said it cannot be confident that SpaceX will use its technology within its terms of service. It cited its experience with Elon Musk's companies already violating contracts in the past.

In describing its partner process, OpenAI said it typically uses custom contracts with large partners. Those agreements are intended to ensure compliance with its terms and safety at scale. OpenAI said that X (Twitter), now part of SpaceX, broke the terms of its contract after Musk acquired the company.

Adding to that account, OpenAI said Musk admitted under oath earlier this year that xAI violated OpenAI's terms of service. OpenAI said xAI is now also part of SpaceX, and that its terms are similar to xAI's own.

Under the Cursor agreement, OpenAI says it has a limited window to cancel after a change of control. It says it will cancel at the latest date allowed under that provision, which is November 12, 2026.
